Two kinds of “open-ear”, and why the cheap one is the newer one
“Open-ear” now covers two different mechanisms, and the price gap in this guide runs along that line.
Bone conduction headphones rest on the cheekbone in front of each ear and vibrate sound into the skull. Nothing sits in or over the canal. This is what Shokz built its name on, and the majority of its catalogue is still bone conduction: the OpenRun, OpenRun Pro 2, OpenSwim and OpenComm lines.
Air conduction open-ear earbuds are the newer, cheaper category. A small conventional speaker, typically 11 to 20 mm, hangs just outside the ear canal on a hook or a clip and fires sound inward. The canal stays open, the hardware is ordinary, and that is why a $59.99 Baseus can exist alongside a $179.95 Shokz. Shokz sells these too (OpenFit Air, OpenFit 2, OpenDots 2), but they are the smaller part of its range.
Both approaches do the same basic job: you hear your audio and you hear the room or the road. Neither isolates. If you want silence, buy sealed earbuds; if you want to hear a car or a colleague while listening, keep going.

Read that table once and a pattern jumps out: on the numbers you can print on a box, the cheapest product wins more rows than it loses. Longest earbud battery, highest IP rating, newest Bluetooth, the only one of the four that publishes all three of SBC, AAC and LDAC, and the lightest by a wide margin. So what exactly are you paying $70 to $120 more for?

What the extra money buys
Fit hardware, which is the whole product. An open-ear earbud that moves is an earbud that sounds worse, because the driver’s angle to your canal sets how much bass you get. Shokz publishes the material and gauge of its hook (0.75 mm nickel-titanium memory alloy on the OpenFit Air), Soundcore publishes a four-position adjustable hook on the AeroFit 2 and claims a fit for over 99% of ear shapes, and Shokz’s OpenFit 2 adds physical buttons so you can adjust volume without tapping a bud that is balanced on your ear. Baseus describes a titanium-alloy C-ring with three cushion sizes (M, L, XL) and “four-point support.” None of it can be verified from a spec sheet, which is why reviews and a generous return window matter more than anything else here.
A clip is not a hook. The Bowie MC2 is a clip-on: it pinches the rim of your ear, like Shokz’s OpenDots 2 and Bose’s Ultra Open. The OpenFit Air, AeroFit 2 and OpenFit 2 loop over the top of the ear. Hooks are generally more secure under hard movement and tolerate glasses differently; clips are lighter and less visible. Which suits you is a body-shape question, not a price question, and you should decide it before you compare anything else.
Warranty and returns. Shokz sells both OpenFit models with a 2-year warranty from Shokz.com. Baseus’s terms vary by channel: its official store lists 12 months, while its general warranty page cites 18 to 24 months. Soundcore’s AeroFit 2 page advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee and a “hassle-free warranty” without stating a duration. On a product whose value depends on how it sits on your ear, the return window is worth real money.
App maturity. All four have a companion app with EQ. Shokz and Soundcore have been iterating theirs across many product generations; Soundcore’s also bundles a sound-therapy mode. Baseus says the MC2 has app support and LDAC; it does not publish an EQ preset list on the product page.
Bass and loudness. Open-ear bass is physics-limited because nothing seals the canal. Soundcore’s 20 × 11.5 mm racetrack driver is physically larger than Baseus’s 11 mm round driver, and Shokz’s OpenFit 2 uses a dual-driver layout specifically to put a second transducer on low frequencies. Larger or dedicated low-frequency hardware is the credible route to more bass in this category; Baseus instead offers a switchable bass boost mode and notes that it costs battery (about 11.5 hours on versus 13 off). Which sounds better is a listening question we cannot settle from the page.
What you do not give up. Multipoint: all four. LDAC: the Baseus and the Soundcore publish it, the Shokz pages do not. Weather resistance for sweat and rain: all four are at least IP54, and the Baseus at IP67 is rated for brief immersion, though remember IEC 60529 tests with fresh water, not sweat.

Sound leakage: open-ear is for awareness, not privacy
Every open-ear earbud leaks. The driver is outside your ear, pointed at a canal it does not seal, and some of its output goes the other way. Makers attack this with directional design and phase cancellation; Shokz calls its version DirectPitch, Baseus cites enlarged anti-blocking vents that “relieve reflection waves,” and Soundcore uses a directional acoustic design. These reduce leakage, they do not remove it.
In practice the rule is simple. At a moderate volume in a normal office, the person at the next desk hears a faint murmur and cannot make out words. At high volume in a quiet room, a library or a late train, they can. If confidential calls are a regular part of your day, do not rely on open-ear earbuds for them. That is not a defect; it is the same openness that lets you hear the room.
This is also why open-ear is the wrong tool for noisy environments. A subway platform or a gym with music will mask quiet passages, and your only fix is more volume, which means more leakage. Open-ear trades isolation for awareness. Use case 1: the office
The strongest case for any of these is a desk. You want to hear your name called, a knock, a phone ringing, without pulling a bud out. Multipoint (laptop plus phone) is on all four, weights range from about 5 g to 10 g per earbud, and none of them plugs your ear for eight hours. The Baseus’s 11.5 to 13 hours of earbud battery covers a full workday without a case visit; the OpenFit Air’s 6 hours does not, so plan a lunchtime top-up.

Use cases 2 and 3: running and cycling
Running is where the ear hook versus clip question gets decided for you. The Shokz OpenFit Air (8.7 g, IP54) and Soundcore AeroFit 2 (IP55) use hooks; the Baseus (IP67, ~5.1 g) and Shokz OpenDots 2 (IP57, 6.4 g, $169.95) use clips. Both designs are used by runners, and the hook is the more conservative choice for anyone whose ears have rejected clip-ons before.
On IP ratings, all four clear the sweat-and-rain bar. IP54 (OpenFit Air) covers splashing; IP55 covers low-pressure jets; IP67 (Baseus) covers dust-tight and 30 minutes at 1 m immersion. None of them is a swimming earbud, and none of the Shokz in this article should be confused with OpenSwim, which is bone conduction. Cycling adds wind and a legal question. Wind across an open-ear driver at road speed masks quiet audio on all of these; expect to run higher volume than on foot, and expect that to cost battery.

It is the best spec sheet here by a clear margin. Its unknowns are fit security at pace and long-term support, so buy from a channel with an easy return.
Buy the Shokz OpenFit Air ($74.95 on sale) if you want an ear hook and a 2-year warranty for the smallest premium over the Baseus. You give up battery (6 hours), IP rating (IP54) and published codec support, and you get Shokz’s hook hardware and app.
Buy the Soundcore AeroFit 2 ($129.99) if adjustable fit and a larger driver matter and you are on Android for LDAC. It is the middle option on price and the only one with a published 10-minute quick charge giving 4 hours.
Buy the Shokz OpenFit 2 ($179.95) if you want the dual-driver design, physical buttons and 11-hour battery, and you have already decided to pay Shokz prices. Its spec-sheet advantage over the Baseus is narrow; its advantage is in the things the spec sheet does not list.
Consider the Shokz OpenDots 2 ($169.95) only if you specifically want a clip, not a hook, with IP57 and a 2-year warranty, and the Baseus’s clip is not secure enough on your ear.
Skip all of them if your listening happens mostly on a subway, in a loud gym, or anywhere you need isolation. That is what sealed earbuds are for.
