If you have seen a Japanese construction worker wearing what looks like an inflated shirt, that is a kuchofuku — a fan-cooled garment that pulls outside air across your skin so sweat evaporates. Two things stand out. First, BURTLE and HOOH publish the identical 30V/120 L/s headline, but BURTLE’s 30V mode steps down to 23V after one hour while HOOH’s constant-voltage design holds 30V for about 2.5 hours — a real difference the headline number hides. Second, the company that invented the category is no longer the airflow leader: Kuchofuku’s own 25V system tops out at 103 L/s.

What you can actually buy outside Japan

Makita — the easy answer. Because the jackets run on Makita’s existing 10.8V/14.4V/18V tool batteries, and because Makita sells worldwide, this is the one you can simply buy. Makita USA lists cordless fan jackets (DFJ201Z, DFJ304Z, DFJ405Z families); Makita India lists DFJ211/212/213. Watch the model prefix: Japan uses FJ/FV, export markets use DFJ — search the Japanese number abroad and you will find nothing. Airflow is lower than the specialist brands (the 2026 A-72132 fan is rated 2.7 m³/min, roughly 45 L/s, though measurement conditions may not match), but you get a locally certified battery and no import problem at all.

BURTLE — same brand, older generation. burtleworkwear.com describes itself as an authorised venture fulfilled from a US distribution centre, and sells a 24V AC09-generation vest kit ($259) and a vest-only AC2064 ($89), plus an Amazon.com listing. Kuchofuku — different brand entirely. The group sells in the US as ZIPPKOOL (office in Schaumburg, Illinois): hi-vis cooling jacket $179, vest-only $60, fan $32, battery $95. Its site quotes 20 L/s — a completely different, much lower-output system than the Japanese 25V kit.

The battery is the border

Here is the practical wall. You can import the garment. You generally cannot import the power.

Japanese forwarding services state plainly that standalone lithium batteries cannot travel on any Japan Post service — EMS, air, SAL or surface — and that such items reaching their warehouse can only be discarded or redirected to a Japanese address. Devices with a built-in or attached battery may ship, capped at two units per parcel.

So the realistic playbook for an overseas buyer is:

  1. Buy the Japanese garment (fabric ships fine)
  2. Buy a locally sold, locally certified fan-and-battery system
