Japan's Makita model numbers do not exist abroad: TD173D is DTD173 in Europe, and the US uses XDT numbers instead. A 2026 guide to 18V LXT vs 40V max XGT, how both sit against Milwaukee M18 and DeWalt 20V MAX, and what actually survives the trip from Japan.
The thing that will waste your first hour: the model number
The same Makita tool carries three structurally different model numbers depending on which market sells it. These are not suffix variations; they are different names.
Japan’s flagship 18V impact driver is the TD173D. Makita’s own UK and New Zealand sites list the spec-for-spec identical tool — 180 Nm max fastening torque, 0— ,600 rpm, four-speed mode selection, 1/4in hex — as the DTD173. Makita USA uses neither convention: its LXT tools take an X prefix, so the previous-generation TD172D appears in the American catalogue as the XDT19.

So the trick is: move the D from the end to the front and you will usually find the European or Oceanian listing. For the US that fails entirely; you have to search Makita USA’s catalogue and match on specifications. The rule is not airtight either — Makita USA lists some LXT products under D numbers, such as the DVP181 vacuum pump.
What catches people out is that batteries do not follow the pattern. A BL1860B is a BL1860B in Tokyo, Manchester and Atlanta. Buyers see matching battery numbers, assume the system is globally identical, then cannot find their tool anywhere.

LXT is not being retired. It is being narrowed.
The persistent rumour is that XGT kills LXT. As of August 2026 the evidence does not support it. Makita still ships new LXT tools and still promotes LXT as its largest system, though its own copy is inconsistent on the count — one headline claims over 350 cordless products, other Makita material says over 325. Either figure makes it the biggest 18V slide-battery ecosystem anyone sells.
What changed is which tools go where. Pro Tool Reviews’ 2026 assessment put it plainly: core LXT development has slowed, but Makita clearly still sees room to expand it in trade-specific tools — recent additions are power cleaners, sanders, site radios. The heavy categories, large SDS and demolition hammers, big-format circular saws, high-draw grinders and outdoor equipment, are launching on XGT.
XGT’s catalogue is far smaller — I found no official Makita count I would stand behind, and a UK dealer’s “above 50 tools and growing” is an estimate, not a spec. LXT is a mature, enormous, still-supported system; XGT is a newer, smaller one where the physically demanding tools now live. Neither is a mistake; buying XGT and expecting LXT’s breadth is.
There is no battery adapter. There is a charger adapter.
This is the most-repeated error in the category. Makita sells the ADP10, and every listing describes it identically: it adapts a 40V max XGT charger so that charger can charge an 18V LXT battery.
That is the whole function. It does not let an LXT battery run an XGT tool, and no Makita product does that in either direction. The interfaces are physically different and the voltages are not close — LXT is 18V nominal, XGT’s “40V max” is 36V nominal. Anyone claiming the platforms are bridgeable is describing the charger and misreading it. In practice the ADP10 lets a two-platform owner travel with one charger: a genuine convenience, and a bad reason to buy into a second platform.
Importing from Japan: the tool travels, the charger doesn’t
Tools and batteries: fine. The LXT slide interface is the same worldwide and battery part numbers are shared, so a Japanese-market TD173D body runs on BL1860B packs you already own.
The charger: not fine. Makita’s Japanese-market chargers are built for Japanese mains. The DC18RF is specified as single-phase AC 100V, 50/60 Hz. North American mains is nominally 120V — roughly 20% above the charger’s rated input, and Makita does not rate it for that.
The trap is mechanical: Japan and the US use the same flat two-blade plug, so a Japanese charger fits a North American socket with no adapter at all. Nothing stops you. I will not claim it fails and will not claim it is safe — neither is verifiable, and lithium-ion charging is a poor place to experiment. The clean answers are a step-down transformer, or a locally-sold charger, which is cheap and removes the question. Frequency is not the variable: Japan runs 50 Hz in the east and 60 Hz in the west, so its chargers already handle both.

Both American systems are deliberately simpler. Milwaukee never split its platform: FORGE packs — the pouch-cell XC6.0, the XC8.0 and the tabless-design HD12.0 — drop into any M18 tool, and Milwaukee states REDLINK compatibility across 275+ M18 solutions. DeWalt solved high power inside one battery family with FLEXVOLT, whose 60V packs step down to run standard 20V MAX tools. DeWalt is reshuffling its branding in 2026 into three tiers — 20V MAX, XR (now absorbing POWERSTACK and POWERPACK) and ATOMIC — but says existing 20V MAX batteries keep working with current and upcoming 20V MAX XR tools.
That is Makita’s real strategic exposure. Milwaukee and DeWalt made “I need more power” a battery purchase. Makita made it a platform purchase.
Be sceptical of confident share percentages — I could not verify a reliable jobsite market-share figure for any of the three, so I am not quoting one. What is documented: Makita reached the top of the Japanese market by the end of the 1960s and remains Japan’s leading power tool manufacturer and exporter, while in North America it is not the volume favourite. Pro Tool Reviews named Milwaukee its best cordless power tool maker for 2026, and trade coverage consistently frames Milwaukee and DeWalt as the American jobsite defaults, with Makita stronger across Europe and Asia.
So what do you actually buy in 2026?
Buy 18V LXT if you want maximum tool choice, already own LXT packs, or are in a Makita-strong market. It is the largest 18V ecosystem available and it is not going away.
Buy 40V max XGT if your work is genuinely heavy and sustained — big hammers, large grinders, cutting, outdoor equipment — and you accept a much smaller catalogue. Do not buy XGT to “future-proof” a light-duty kit; that is paying platform-switch costs for capability you will never draw.
If you are in the US starting from zero, the case for Makita is weaker than the tools deserve. Milwaukee M18 and DeWalt 20V MAX each give you one battery family that never forces a second platform, plus denser local service and accessories.
Do not import Japanese Makita to save money. Import it because a specific Japan-only model does something you want — then buy the charger locally.
