The short version: the Kindle Paperwhite at $199.99 is still the Kindle to buy, even after Amazon’s August 21, 2026 price increase pushed every non-Scribe model up by $40 to $50. Buy the Colorsoft ($289.99) only if you read comics, magazines or illustrated reference books. Buy the 11-inch Kindle Scribe ($429.99 and up) only if you will actually write on it. The basic Kindle ($149.99) is the pick when weight and price matter more than waterproofing.
This guide covers every Kindle Amazon sells in the US as of September 2026, compared on screen size, color, waterproofing, storage and price, with the August increase spelled out so you know what you are paying for.
The lineup is three families plus Kids editions
Kindle model names overlap, but there are only three families.
- Black-and-white readers: Kindle (6-inch) and Kindle Paperwhite (7-inch)
- Color e-paper: Kindle Colorsoft (7-inch)
- Pen-enabled notebooks: Kindle Scribe (11-inch, black-and-white or color)
Everything else is a tier within a family: Signature Edition, larger storage, or a Kids bundle. Answer two questions, “do I need color?” and “do I need to write?”, and you are down to two or three candidates.

Kids editions bundle the same hardware with a cover, a two-year worry-free guarantee and a year of Amazon Kids+. Before the August increase they listed at $129.99 (Kindle Kids), $179.99 (Paperwhite Kids) and $269.99 (Colorsoft Kids); check the current product pages, because Amazon adjusted the adult models first and the Kids bundles can lag.
Amazon’s battery figures assume 30 minutes of reading a day, light setting 13 and wireless off. Read an hour or two a day and expect a quarter to a third of the quoted weeks.
Black-and-white: the $50 between Kindle and Paperwhite buys three things
The basic Kindle and the Paperwhite are $50 apart. That $50 buys:
- A 7-inch screen instead of 6, which fits a paperback page without zooming
- IPX8 waterproofing for the bath, the pool and the kitchen
- A 17-LED front light instead of 4, which means fewer bright patches in the dark
The basic Kindle’s counter-argument is 158 grams and the lowest price in the lineup. If you read one-handed on a crowded train and never near water, it is the more comfortable device. Note that the ad-free basic Kindle is $169.99, only $30 below the ad-supported Paperwhite.
The Paperwhite Signature Edition ($249.99) adds 32GB, an adjustable warm light, auto-brightness and Qi wireless charging. Unless you store a large comic library or read in bed with the warm light on, the extra $50 is hard to justify.

Color: the Colorsoft trades sharpness and battery for color
The Kindle Colorsoft is the 7-inch, IPX8 Paperwhite chassis with a color e-paper panel. Comic covers, magazine spreads and diagrams show in color, which is the entire point.
Color e-paper has structural limits, and Amazon does not hide them:
- Color renders at 150 ppi against 300 ppi for black-and-white text, so small type looks softer than on a Paperwhite
- Battery is rated at up to 8 weeks, against 12 for the Paperwhite
- It costs $90 more than the Paperwhite at $289.99
If your reading is mostly text with the occasional comic, the Paperwhite wins on every axis but color. If you read manga, magazines through Kindle Unlimited, illustrated technical books or picture books with children, the Colorsoft earns its price.

Writing: the 11-inch Scribe comes in three tiers, and the middle one is right
The current Kindle Scribe generation moved from a 10.2-inch to an 11-inch screen, slimmed to about 5.4 mm and roughly 400 grams, and ships the Premium Pen in the box on every model. The August increase skipped the Scribe entirely, so these prices are unchanged.
| Kindle Scribe (current gen) | US price | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| No front light, 16GB | $429.99 | Daylight-only use, lowest entry into a writing Kindle |
| Front-lit, 32GB / 64GB | $499.99 / $549.99 | Bedroom, planes, evenings. Most buyers belong here |
| Scribe Colorsoft, 32GB / 64GB | $629.99 / $679.99 | Ten colored pens and five highlighters for color-coded notes |
The black-and-white Scribe is rated at up to 12 weeks (16 without the front light); the Scribe Colorsoft at up to 8 weeks, and its 150 ppi color panel is softer for text-heavy notes. Unless you have a concrete reason to color-code, the front-lit 32GB model at $499.99 is the sensible buy.

What the August 21, 2026 increase actually did
Overnight on August 21, Amazon raised US prices on every Kindle except the Scribe. The increases hit Amazon.com and its retail partners such as Best Buy at the same time.
| Model | Before | After | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle (with ads) | $109.99 | $149.99 | $40 |
| Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (with ads) | $159.99 | $199.99 | $40 |
| Paperwhite Signature Edition | $199.99 | $249.99 | $50 |
| Kindle Colorsoft 16GB | $249.99 | $289.99 | $40 |
| Colorsoft Signature Edition | $279.99 | $319.99 | $40 |
| Kindle Scribe (all) | unchanged | unchanged | $0 |
Two things follow from this. First, the ad-free surcharge still exists in the US, which is not the case everywhere: Japan dropped ad-supported Kindles entirely in October 2024 and sells only ad-free models. Second, sale prices matter more than they did. A Prime Day or Black Friday discount that brings the Paperwhite back to the $150s is now a much bigger deal than it was a year ago.
When to buy
Prime Day in July, Amazon’s October Prime event and Black Friday in November have historically produced the lowest Kindle prices of the year, sometimes at or below the old list prices. The October 2026 event had not been dated when we wrote this. If nothing on your reading list is urgent, waiting a few weeks is the rational move; if it is, the Paperwhite at $199.99 is still a reasonable buy.
The decision, by use case
- Read books, do not want to think about it: Kindle Paperwhite, $199.99
- Lightest and cheapest, no water nearby: Kindle, $149.99
- Comics, magazines, illustrated books: Kindle Colorsoft, $289.99
- Handwritten notes and PDF markup: Kindle Scribe front-lit 32GB, $499.99
- Color-coded notes: Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, $629.99 and up
- A child: Paperwhite Kids; Colorsoft Kids if picture books dominate
The Kindle range is not a ladder where the expensive model is simply better. Each family is good at one thing. Decide whether your reading is text, color or handwriting, and the model picks itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Which Kindle should most people buy in 2026?
- A: The Kindle Paperwhite, at $199.99 with lock-screen ads after the August 2026 increase. It has the 7-inch 300 ppi screen, IPX8 waterproofing and a 17-LED front light that the $149.99 basic Kindle lacks, and the extra $50 for the Signature Edition only buys 32GB, a warm-light option, auto-brightness and wireless charging.
- Q: What changed in the August 2026 Kindle price increase?
- A: On August 21, 2026 Amazon raised US prices on every non-Scribe Kindle by $40 to $50. For novels and non-fiction the Paperwhite is cheaper, sharper and lasts longer.

- A: The front-lit 32GB Kindle Scribe at $499.99 for most people. The $429.99 model drops the front light, which matters in bed and on planes, and the Scribe Colorsoft at $629.99 and up adds colored pens and highlighters but renders color at 150 ppi and runs a shorter battery life. All 2025-generation Scribes have an 11-inch screen and include the Premium Pen.

- A: Historically Prime Day in July, Amazon's October Prime event and Black Friday in November have produced the year's lowest Kindle prices, sometimes matching or beating the pre-increase list prices. The October 2026 event dates had not been announced at the time of writing. If you can wait a few weeks, it is usually worth it.
