The problem docks do not solve

A common desk in 2026: a work laptop issued by an employer, and a personal machine. One good monitor. One keyboard you like. One mouse.

The usual solution is to unplug a USB-C cable from one laptop and plug it into the other, several times a day. It works, and it wears out the cable and the ports, and it takes long enough to be annoying.

The distinction matters. If both machines already drive the monitor some other way — say a monitor with two inputs you switch with its own buttons — you only need the peripherals switched, and a USB switch is the cheaper, simpler purchase.

The specification that decides the tier: USB 2.0 versus USB 3.0

The cheapest switches carry USB 2.0 for the peripheral ports. That is 480Mbps, and it is fine for a keyboard, a mouse and a headset.

It is not fine for:

  • A webcam at 1080p or above. USB 2.0 bandwidth forces heavier compression, and video calls look worse than they should.
  • External drives. 480Mbps is roughly 60MB/s, slower than a decade-old hard disk.
  • Audio interfaces. Latency and channel count both suffer.

Why a hardware switch beats the software alternatives

Utilities that share one keyboard and mouse across machines over the network are popular and genuinely clever. They also have three problems in exactly the scenario described here:

Corporate policy. Work laptops frequently block the installation of software that intercepts input devices, for reasonable security reasons. A KVM presents standard USB HID devices — nothing to install, nothing to approve.

No video. Software solutions move your pointer between two screens. They do not put two computers on one monitor. If the monitor is the resource you are short of, software does not help.

Failure modes. When the network hiccups, so does your mouse. A hardware switch has no network dependency.
