AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3: Open Fit or Sealed Comes First (Both AirPods 4 Versions, ANC, Battery and Health Features Compared)
AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3 comes down to fit before features: open fit or a foam-infused silicone seal. We compare ANC, battery, case, IP rating and the Pro 3's heart-rate and hearing extras on Apple's published specs — and explain how the ANC version of AirPods 4 blurs the middle.
Pick a fit before you pick a feature
Most AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3 comparisons start with noise cancellation. That is the wrong first question, because the two products put fundamentally different things in your ear. AirPods 4 rest in the outer ear with no tips at all — an open fit that never plugs the canal. AirPods Pro 3 seal the canal with silicone ear tips that Apple now fuses with a thin layer of soft foam, in five sizes down to XXS.
If a sealed ear makes you feel plugged, pressured or seasick after twenty minutes, no spec sheet will fix that, and the Pro 3’s headline features sit on the wrong side of a fit you will not wear. If, on the other hand, you want silence on a plane or in an open office, an open fit physically cannot deliver it, whatever the electronics do. Decide which camp you are in first — our open-ear vs in-ear earbuds guide covers the trade-off in general terms — and only then compare features.
The complication, and the reason this comparison is genuinely interesting in 2026, is that “AirPods 4” is two products. Apple sells a standard AirPods 4 without Active Noise Cancellation and an AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, in identical shells. The ANC version is the odd one out: open-fit comfort with a real slice of the Pro feature list. It blurs what used to be a clean line between the regular and Pro tiers.

Two things stand out. First, the chip is the same across all three — H2 — so the shared software layer (Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking, Voice Isolation on calls, Siri interactions) is not what you are paying for. Second, the gaps that remain are physical: the seal, the extra sensors, the IP57 shell, the bigger per-charge battery.
”ANC” on the box does not mean the same thing twice
Both the AirPods 4 ANC model and the Pro 3 say Active Noise Cancellation, but they start from different physics. A sealed tip blocks a chunk of outside sound before any electronics run; ANC then cancels much of what leaks through, and it is best at steady low-frequency rumble. An open fit blocks almost nothing passively, so its ANC is doing all the work against an open door.
Apple’s own language reflects the gap. For the AirPods 4 ANC model, the pitch is that it “helps reduce low-frequency environmental noise — like airplane engines and city traffic.” For the Pro 3, Apple publishes multipliers: up to 2x the noise cancellation of AirPods Pro 2, and up to 4x that of the original AirPods Pro. Apple publishes no such multiplier for AirPods 4.
Read that as: the AirPods 4 ANC model takes the edge off a commute while keeping the airy, unplugged feel; the Pro 3 is built to make a plane cabin genuinely quiet. If terms like Adaptive Audio and Transparency are new to you, our wireless earbud specs explained guide defines each one — the short version is that both the ANC AirPods 4 and the Pro 3 get all three modes (Adaptive Audio blending, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness, which lowers volume when you start talking), while the base AirPods 4 gets none.
The battery cost of cancellation differs too. The AirPods 4 ANC model drops from 5 hours to 4 with ANC on, and from 30 hours to 20 with the case. The Pro 3 runs up to 8 hours per charge with ANC on — double the AirPods 4 figure — though its 24-hour case total is below the AirPods 4’s ANC-off 30 hours, because those 8-hour buds drain a case faster. If you use the Hearing Aid feature, Apple quotes up to 10 hours in Transparency.
The Pro 3 layer: sensors, hearing, and a tougher shell
What genuinely separates the Pro 3 is not sound at all. It is the health layer, and it has no counterpart on either AirPods 4.
Heart rate. The Pro 3 tracks heart rate and calories during workouts using LEDs that pulse invisible light 256 times per second, feeding up to 50 workout types in the Fitness app. Your earbuds become a second wearable — or a first one, if you do not wear a watch.
Hearing. Three features: a Hearing Test, a Hearing Aid feature that boosts the voices around you (with automatic Conversation Boost), and Hearing Protection. For anyone with mild hearing difficulty, this is the quiet headline of the product — it is the difference between earbuds and a health device, and nothing in the AirPods 4 line touches it.
Durability and finding. IP57 against the AirPods 4’s IP54 — better dust protection and water resistance for sweaty training. The Pro 3 case adds Ultra Wideband, which Apple says extends Precision Finding range by 1.5x; the AirPods 4 ANC case has a speaker for Find My but not the UWB upgrade, and the base AirPods 4 case has neither.
Live Translation, notably, is not a Pro exclusive: Apple lists it on both the Pro 3 and the ANC version of AirPods 4, with device and language limits. Another reason the middle option keeps blurring the line.
What the sales chart says about price
Apple positions the three at entry, middle and premium tiers, and street prices move with sales, so treat any number as a snapshot. At the time of writing (Aug 2026), AirPods 4 was the best-selling earbud on Amazon US at roughly $97 with a 4.5-star average across about 34,000 ratings, with AirPods Pro 3 second at roughly $184 and 4.4 stars across about 14,000 ratings — and, endearingly, Apple’s $13 wired EarPods in third.
That chart tells you the market has already voted for the thesis of this article: most buyers take the comfortable open fit at half the price, and a large minority pays roughly double for the seal and the sensors. If neither tier fits your budget, sub-$30 earbuds have become surprisingly competent — our TOZO A1 vs Soundcore P20i vs JBL Vibe Beam comparison covers that bracket — and our best wireless earbuds of 2026 roundup places the AirPods against non-Apple rivals.

Who should buy which
Buy AirPods 4 (standard) if sealed ear tips bother you and you mostly listen where silence is not the point — home, walking, calls. You get the same H2 chip, Spatial Audio, Voice Isolation and 30-hour case total as the ANC model, in Apple’s smallest case yet (more than 10 percent smaller by volume than the previous generation), at the lowest price in the line.
Buy AirPods 4 with ANC if you want the open fit but commute or work somewhere noisy. It is the only way to get ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Live Translation, a wireless-charging case and a Find My case speaker without switching to silicone tips. Accept the 4-hour ANC-on runtime and the physical limits of cancelling noise in an open ear.
Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you want maximum isolation, or any part of the health layer. The sealed foam-infused tips plus Apple’s strongest ANC rating, double the ANC-on battery per charge, IP57, heart-rate tracking and the hearing suite justify the premium tier — provided a sealed fit is something you will actually wear all day.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Does AirPods 4 have noise cancellation?
- A: Only one of the two versions does. Apple sells AirPods 4 in a standard model without Active Noise Cancellation and a separate model with it. The ANC version also adds Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, a wireless-charging case and a case speaker for Find My. If ANC matters to you, check the box carefully — the two look identical.
- Q: What can AirPods Pro 3 do that AirPods 4 cannot?
- A: Per Apple's published pages: heart-rate tracking during workouts (with up to 50 workout types in the Fitness app), the hearing suite (Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection), foam-infused silicone ear tips in five sizes including XXS, an IP57 rating versus IP54, and longer ANC battery life at up to 8 hours per charge versus up to 4 hours on the AirPods 4 ANC model.
- Q: Is AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3 better for noise cancellation?
- A: AirPods Pro 3. Both use Apple's H2 chip, but the Pro 3 seals the ear canal with foam-infused silicone tips, and Apple rates its ANC at up to 2x that of AirPods Pro 2. The AirPods 4 ANC model reduces low-frequency noise like traffic and airplane engines, but its open fit cannot physically block sound the way a sealed tip does.
- Q: How long does the battery last on AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3?
- A: Apple's figures: AirPods 4 run up to 5 hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the case (up to 4 and 20 hours with ANC enabled on the ANC model). AirPods Pro 3 run up to 8 hours per charge with ANC on and up to 24 hours with the case, or up to 10 hours in Transparency with the Hearing Aid feature.
- Q: Are AirPods 4 waterproof?
- A: No — they are water resistant, not waterproof. Apple rates both AirPods 4 versions IP54 for dust, sweat and water resistance, and AirPods Pro 3 IP57. That covers sweat and splashes, not swimming or showering, and resistance can diminish with wear.
